Local History & Genealogy
The Gadsden Public Library maintains a collection of published works on Gadsden-area and State of Alabama history in the Bobby M. Junkins Alabama Room located in the Reference and Genealogy Department. All titles are cataloged and searchable in the online catalog. For a more comprehensive local history collection, including archival material and assistance with microfilm and genealogical research, please contact the Genealogy Desk at: 256-549-4699 ext. 117 or at: gplgen@gadsdenlibrary.org.
The Main Library maintains a near-complete collection of City Directories dating back to 1900, and a limited collection of Gadsden and Etowah County area high school yearbooks dating from the early 1900s to the present. Please contact the Reference Desk with inquiries about these resources: 256-549-4699 ext. 116.
Microfilm readers are available and use is self-service. Librarians and Library Support Staff are available for assistance. Gadsden Times newspapers from 1867 to the present day are available in the Genealogy Department at: 256-549-4699 ext. 117, or at gplgen@gadsdenlibrary.org.

- The Gadsden Times (1867 - present)
- AncestryLibrary.com is the Gadsden Public Library’s special online edition of Ancestry.com. This is a free service (for use in the library) and houses census records for all 50 states for 1790 – 1930. The service also consists of family history files, marriage records, the U.S. Immigration collection as well as other invaluable genealogy databases containing millions of records.
- Heritage Quest Online is available for home access using a library card. With this database patrons can access census records, county histories, revolutionary war pension records and much more.
Government Documents
The Gadsden Public Library has been a selective depository for Federal government documents since 1963, and maintains an extensive collection of Congressional and legal materials. Some important titles, such as the Congressional Record are supplemented with back runs in microform. - Code of Federal Regulation, which outlines rules, regulations, and standards for every organization of the Federal government
- United States Supreme Court decisions dating back to the early 1900’s
- Compilations of both public and private laws enacted by the United States House and Senate legislative bodies
- Public Papers of the Presidents of the United States
- IRS forms and publications
- Brochures, books, pamphlets from the Health and Human Services Department
- Veterans Administration information from the Department of Defense and branches of the Armed Forces
